Container Gardening for Everyone

Container gardening allows anyone to garden, whether you have only limited space or a large garden plot. Vegetable gardening, flower gardening and herb gardening can all be done successfully in containers. Too, container gardening has many advantages. It is easy to raise organic vegetables in containers because there is less need for the use of sprays and pesticides.. Poor soil does not have to be a problem; soil borne diseases can be eliminated. Containers can be moved to take advantage of the sun. Container gardening is also a great time saver. No need to spend hours weeding, watering and fertilizing.

For the elderly or the disabled, container gardening is ideal. Containers can be placed at any height to make it easier. A book, Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew discusses the use of raised wooden containers to provide easier access for the handicapped. This book and others like it are available at Alibris
With the container options available almost anyone can have fresh, organic vegetables on their table all summer long. Raising your own vegetables in your own mini-garden is a relaxing and simple pleasure.

Successful container gardening does take some advance planning. Available space will determine the size of your garden, but good  practices will allow you to maximize the amount of vegetables or herbs that can be grown in your chosen site or sites.

The first step in planning your mini-garden is to survey your space. Be imaginative. Container gardening can be done almost anywhere.Containers can be almost any shape or size; they can be decorative or simply utilitarian. You can buy them or make them or find them; it doesn’t matter. An old wheelbarrow, a hanging basket, an old tin pail will do. A major requirement is that they have good drainage.

Container  gardening requires a careful choice of what to plant. Choice depends on the size of the container, and unless you want to move them daily, it also depends on the amount of sun available. Container gardening allows you to take advantage of space that may not have enough sun for regular gardening because containers can be moved. .Some plants require full sun, while others do well in partial sun or shade.

Organic gardening advocates and healthy eating proponents have spurred the growth of container gardening.  Even those who live in apartments or have limited space can now enjoy home grown fresh vegetables.  This increased interest in container gardening has caused plant breeders to develop new varieties of vegetables that require less space and are more suitable for container gardening. Some fruits and berries are also suitable for container gardening.

Container gardening need not preclude regular vegetable gardening, but can simply expand on it. Many vegetables do just as well or better in containers. Today, with container  gardening  choices greatly expanded,  almost anyone, no matter where they live, can take advantage of one of the most popular and satisfying hobbies and at the same time enjoy fresh, organic produce from ones own garden. Container gardening is truly for everyone.  It can’t get better than that.
